Watched 2012 with Nelson and Chua the first week it was released. Damn! We went on a Saturday evening and ended up with midnight show. The whole place is crowded with people who was there for this big picture. When i see the queue which reached the game station, i was so surprised. I began regretting even stepping into the place. Not only that we could only get 12.50am tickets, there are only 3 front rows' seats available. These people are crazy, i tell you... We had to lepak in the cinema for hours before we could actually get to watch out movie.
Review:
The moment i saw the trailer, and found out it's directed by Roland Emmerich, i knew what is to be expected already. So, what i did is to avoid judging any illogical/unpractical storyline that i might come across. And it works, at least at some point. If an awesome script with interesting, logical, fresh new story and deep character development, 2012 is not for you. It's another disaster movie by Roland Emmerich, so you must be ready to except lots of special affects, cheesy dialogue, and last-second escape from near death explosion, volcano eruption, earth quakes and tsunami... Don't even care if it's really the Mayan who anticipated the world end or whether it is possible for the plane to take off in such a short track, etc etc. Remember that this is all fictional and you'll have fun watching.
Nonetheless, this movie is still not an Oscar material. Well, i'm not saying it's bad but it could've been better. There are too many nail-biting, last-second escape by the main characters. In fact, it's too much. I heard this is last disaster movie Emmerich will be directing, so maybe, he's trying to squeeze every single idea that popped up in his mind into this 2 hours and 45 minutes showtime. They, of course gives you the thrill and suspense, but only in the first half. The second half is rather disappointing. I got tired with all those building collapsing, earth splitting, flames burning in the skies and John Cusack's family's last minute survival.
The final heroic scene actually makes me felt like i was watching another Titanic/Pearl Habour movie with all the lovey dovey "i'm gonna go save the world, i may die, but i miss you" sorta scenes. It's a waste of screen time and it ain't anything romantic neither.
And like i previously mentioned, there's no character development. All characters remained shallow throughout the movie. Actors/actresses' performing isn't very intriguing either. I guess the whole budget is concentrated on the special effects and not the casts.
Overall, i think it's a combination of Titanic, Poseidon, The Day After Tomorrow and many other disaster movie. When all of this added together, it's supposed to generate some sort of synergy but it didn't. In fact, it is relatively downgraded. Too bad, as it's supposed to be a great movie.
Anyway, try working the magic i told you and don't reason. It's not really as bad as i said. I'm just being picky. I really did enjoyed my time in the cinema. If you haven't watch this and planning to, go ahead. It's not a total let down la....
